Throughout the entire world less than 500 people were aware of the atomic bomb theory. The rest knew the Americans were going to invade Japan, no question about it. The only question was how soon?

The Americans, with limited forces as resources, drove and island-hopped the Japanese about the Pacific. They worked the Japanese to their retreat on their Home Islands. With the mopping-up of Europe, all efforts were focused on Japan. The Japanese were clearly on the defensive. American forces uninterrupted boatloads of supplies were momentum building their offense.

This was going to be the modern warfare clash of titans between the coming of age power and a deeply traditional one mostly unknown to the world. The mission was to obtain an unconditional surrender from a nation that did not believe in surrender. This was not going to be anything like Normandy.
